: Great... I just get turned on to Golden Spirals and now they're no longer available (regardless of what anybody's website sez).
: Does anybody know of good substitute? Nylon windings over gut - nylon windings over synthetic gut- I dunno?
: I play no arco and slap (bluegrass/rockabilly style) about 30% of the time. The GSpirals were great because they have more 'note' than any other gut I've played.
You might want to try what I use ( I also slap the bass but want note as well ) - I use Rotosound Superb's for my D & G --- nylon filament core with flat nylon winding , Thomastik Dominant's for the E & A perlon ( nylon to the rest of us ! ) filament core with flat steel winding .
The reason I don't use a full set of each is that the Rotosound E & A are wire wound so that when you slap it wears away the side of your hand ! Tomastik Dominant D & G are of such a light guage that they don't last me any length of time - they keep snapping .
With the set that I use , as they both have a similar core they are fairly well balanced tonally .
Picato make an ALL nylon wound Rockbilly set which slap really easily but they are so slack that you get hardly any tone from your bass at all -- it's just my opinion but if I were you I'd avoid them at all costs !
Hope this has been of some help ,
