: : : I am looking at buying a new fully-carved string bass. I am cosidering a Chinese made bass which cost $3,400 or a Wilfer that cost $5,500. Any thoughts about which way to go?

Hello.........I also have a Shen Rogeri, which I love. I live in Portland, OR, and this bass has been checked out by a couple of top area jazzers, including my teacher, who seems to think it's a fine instrument. The Rogeri has a beautiful warm tone, and solid construction. I am studying both jazz and classical technique and the instrument is well suited to either. Good luck.

: : I'd go with the Wilfer any day.much better construction, better setup, more comfortable neck than a chinese copy.

: 1. I don't know what it means by better construction, but my Samuel Shen Rogeri Model is well put together. It has a HUGE tone.

: 2. I always thought that "set-up" was done by the luthier. The fingerboard on my Shen is dark ebony and very comfortable with excellent action.

: 3. I don't know which Chinese "copy" this means, but the neck on my Shen is as comfortable as any European bass I have played in the last 30 years.

: I think that Chinese basses like palantino and cremona have somewhat soiled the reputation of Chinese basses like World com and Enron have soiled the name of business.

: The fact is that workshops like Shen and Christopher make well constructed professional model basses built by outstanding and skilled craftsman. I can remember when Japanese was synonomous with "junk". How about "Sony"?

: Now is the chance to carefully select a bass from a top Chinese workshop and have a pedigree that will certainly increase in value. At the same time, you can purchase an excellent instrument and save some money at the same time. Some shops are managed by Chinese-Americans familiar with American style "quality contarol"

: I would be careful about taking the advice of someone whose opinions are not very specific. Instead, play some instruments and decide for yourself.
