The metal ones that slide up to the bridge have a tendency to destroy the thread wrapping when not in place over the bridge. Also, the rubber "Tourte" style mutes don't deliver much tonal effect. The more expensive ebony mutes have to be completly removed, but do offer the most tonal effect.

Something to consider is the sound made by the performer when applying the mute, any unnecessary sounds in applying or removing the mute are to be avoided.
