Does it have a stock Fender bridge on it? My Japanese Fender J-bass had the same problem and I put a BadAs* II bridge on it. If you want to take drastic measures, so with a string-through bridge. Generally, strings will sound dead when the sustain is poor. Fender bridges are notoriously dead sounding. My strings last for months at a time now. My personal preference for long lasting lively strings is Blue Steel.
