My advice would be to keep your thumb on G until it is absolutley neccesary to move it. Reaching C and C# shouldn't be that much of a stretch. If your solo or piece only requires you to reach a high D, don't move your whole thumb, pull the thumb up to the B and use your third finger, then move back down.
