I bought a Cremona for $600, and it held up fine for two years after I spent another $200, but a lot of the low-cost Asian basses are made poorly, and will require $150-$300 to set them up properly and make them playable. And even after that, some Asian basses have major structural problems, like the fingerboards or backs come unglued. Either buy the instrument at a store that knows how to set up basses, or have a qualified luthier set the instrument up for you. Never buy a low-cost Asian bass from a mail-order place -- you need to be able to play it first, and ensure that it has been set up well.
Good luck.
