Dear bassists,
I have a vintage King Mortone double bass for sale in New York City. The bass in excellent condition for its age (probably 50-60 years) and its serial number is 3380. King basses were made in Cleveland, OH, and many people in the bass community have often commented that the quality of these instruments is far superior than Kay or American Standard basses produced in the same decades. I have taken several pictures of the bass that show all its parts in detail, and will be glad to email them on request.
Just a couple of months ago I spent more than $1000 on this bass: I had world-famous luthier David Gage install a new top grade ebony fingerboard, and set the bass up professionally (I have receipts to prove this). The tone of this bass is HUGE, bowed or plucked, and the instrument has only been used for a couple of hours after being at Gageís shop, so the fingerboard is still brand new, and feels like butter, no buzzes whatsoever even at a low action. This King would be a perfect choice for players who donít like using an amp on the gig...its big sound is guaranteed to keep up with the loudest drummers out there! However, the instrument does amplify well with a pick-up like the Realist or the Underwood. In David Gageís words, the instrument is now worth $3500, but I will let it go for $3000 firm. As a bonus, I will restring the bass with hardly used Thomastik Spirocore orchestral strings, so you wonít have to spend an additional $120 to get a new set, and I will also include a bow quiver for free. I regret that I may not be able to ship the instrument, so any prospective buyers should be able to come try it out in New York City. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have about the instrument.
