: I have a beat up Anton Scroetter that has had a broken neck and cracked head that has been repaired, and currently has a peice of paper holding the tail peice in place, but still sounds "decent"
: I just bought one of those Devilli things offline, which was probably a mistake but I needed something quick. I have a fishman and a barcus berry pickup with the preamp. I think I prefer the barcus berry pickup. Do you think the Scroetter with all of it's flaws is better or the Devilli? and how do I "set up" a bass??
: where can I find solo strings? I really do not know a lot about upright equipment
: PLEASE HELP!
Do yourself a favor and find a reputable luthier and have him/her set up both your basses for you. Have him look at the repairs on your Schroetter bass and give you an opinion about their quality. A well-done repair can be just as good as new structurally. After you have a good setup on both basses decide which one you like better based on playing them and listening. A damaged bass that has been well-repaired can be just as good or better than a brand new bass (especially a DeVilli).
