Basically (and I agree), the best mics for under $1000 are ADK's 'A51' and the Rodes mics (esp the NT3, NT2 and NTK).

And on the preamp topic, the UltraMic preamps in the Soundcraft Folio range are fantastic. I tried them out and they beat the Yamahas. The UltraMic pre's are also better than most stand-alone preamps (unless you pay thousands of dollars, of course).
