My teacher, Dan Weiner, suggested the permutation exercise as a warm up, advancing a half note up the fret board to the 12th fret and descending a half note in kind.

Many years ago I permuted 4 notes (1 fret per finger)over 3 strings as a string crossing exercise. The 1st 3 notes are a diagonal pattern, the subsequent 3 note sets are broken patterns...:

--------------------x-----
------------------x-------
----------------x---------

then
------------------x-------
----------------x---------
----------------------x---

then
----------------x---------
----------------------x---
--------------------x-----

last
----------------------x---
--------------------x-----
------------------x-------

Once this becomes comfortable play it descending. Oh, btw, this musically useless physical exercise takes some concentration.
