I have a fretless Fender Jazz bass with flatwound strings.
The only way I can intentionally make my bass sound like an upright is
if I play over the end of the neck using only the bridge pickup. If I play
anywhere else using any other pickup combination you won't mistake it for
anything but an electric. As for round wound strings,I and a few other guys
on the forum I've talked with don't recommend using them, mainly because
with no frets to rest against, they'll start to score your fingerboard
almost immediately. As for half rounds,I haven't used them on my fretless,
but to me they're very close to flats in tone and feel.If you try them, just
keep an eye on the fingerboard.
Hope this helped,Mickster
