But Carol, believe it or not slap is actually a valid technique in the
hands of a good player. There is more to it than what a guitar store show
off can show you in 5 minutes.

Back to the original question.
There are 2 very fine books that show you how to musically use this technique.
You need to know how to read music. The first is one is called Slap It by
Tony Oppenhiem. A graduate from Berklee. The second is from a professor at Berklee called the Slap Bass Bible. These cover what is often referred to as "old school slap" Not the Victor Wooten double thump stuff. I personlly like the old school stuff better.
