Here is a tip on practicing with a metronome- The idea is to gradually have less and less of the click to rely on. For instance....let's say you have a 16th note feel grrove you want to work on. 1st set your metronome on a 16th note pulse. When that becomes comfortable, cut the metronome in half so the metronome clicks on the eighth notes. After you lock with that try setting the metronome to just Quarter note pulse, then a half note pulse, then try to play the groove with the metronome only clicking on beat one! This works great in weening yourself from relying on the metronome and developing great internal time keeping. Hope this helps!
