Hi, Ben. I agree with everyone else, playing with your fingers is worth the blisters and pain! But, if you are absolutely against it, so be it. A felt pick is nice way for pickin' bassists to achieve a smooth, thumpy sound. I think that it is the closest that someone who picks can get to a fingerstyle sound. I usually reccommend felt picks to new students who come to me playing with a nylon or plastic pick.
Slapping is really cool, but it takes a lot of practice to get your thumb accurately hitting the strings cleanly. Don't give up! It will come with time.
