If your'e looking for an acoustic/double bass "soft" or "mellow" sound, try thorwing away that felt pick, pick the strings with your THUMB, high up on the neck, (past the top pick-ups at least )but you need good control on the pressure you use with the thumb to prevent sudden loudness. In addition you can finger-pick ( index and middle ) very close to the bridge - this obtains another style of mellow tone like that on acoustics/double bass. Hope this helps and the most important thing to remember is to try and develop your own distinct natural style - forget trying to emulate other people as they didn'e get there by trying to be someone else.
