I guess it comes from my double bass background. I don't know how great an idea it is to stretch your hand out like that. I tend to use 1,2 and 4. It keeps my hand more relaxed.
: Knowing how to "play bass" is important. I think alot of people have technique to spare but can't put 12 good measures of blues together to save their life. I do think that scales are important. I think they give you a good understanding of theory and key, and that is important. I don't think that scales should be the end all of your learning.
: This is a great board, lots of great discusison and ideas. It's always nice to hear other ideas and make yourself think and evaluate your playing, or teaching.
