I agree with everyone so far. I don't know why there are all these method books with the one finger to a fret way of fingering. It causes tension and is not good, big hands or little.

I am teaching bass and I am trying to put together a "method book" myself. I hate the fingering that is prevelent in most bass books.

I think you need to think of "shifting" not "stretching" for playing things like C to Eb on the A string. It's hard to explain without showing you. Think of your thumb as a pivot point.
