Seriously, I assume you mean chords, not cords (the things you use to plug yer bass into an amp). Chords are basically two or more notes being played at the same time. The INTERVALS(steps ie 1 fret/half step, 2frets whole step) between the notes (chord tones)determine what KIND of chord it is. The kind of chord (major, minor, diminished, augmented) and the TENSIONS on it (7th, 9th, flat 9 etc.)along with the patterns of RESOLUTION (where the harmony is going) help determine what FUNCTION (tonic, minor two chord etc.)the chord has in the harmony.
Playing chords one chord tone after the other is called an ARPEGGIO.
