You may want to try the prestigeous Henry Mancini Institute which is a tough program but if the student-musician is adept at the upright, can read some, play classical and some jazz (must audition.....they have audition locations, or send in a tape), then he/she can get in. It's geared for mostly post-grad students of college but occasionally if the student is gifted, they will accept someone 18. It's not too expensive, is accredited, has the finest of teachers, finest of musicians/arrangers/composers coming there for work-classes, as well as the student gets paid for doing record dates, big band concerts, combo gigs during the 1 month progtram (in August). There are nice dorms to live in and help with accomodations too. It's intensive, but the BEST, you can't beat it. Even lunches with the names in the music business, direct contact, networking etc. Bert Turetzkey does the string bass (upright) part (he's the teacher of Nathan East) and I do the elec. bass part. This is the real thing, not just some "starry-eyed" school who throw in a few celebs to attract students then sock it to you with tuition for little education. You get a ton of education, tons of experience (being led by Jerry Goldsmith, other bigtime conductors etc.) in orchestral work, playing for the finest in jazz, etc., it's heavy-duty stuff.
