How to get rid of all this? Use correct/safe/proven LH technique, quit using that 3rd finger in place of the 4th finger, get a lighter bass, or sit down, and for god's sake, use your thumb as a PIVOT, allowing the fingers of the hand to move as a group while the thumb stays in one spot....the ONLY way to play and not hurt. And, do lay on a hard rubber ball in the upper left quadrant of your left neck/left shoulder for a few minutes after playing to pull out the muscle spasms until you get yourself together.

I think this pretty much explains why I'm getting the pain. Not having played for a while, I got back into it by practicing scales and exercises, one of which is playing major scales in alternating thirds, and, for example, using a G major scale, when I hit the D-F# interval, it involves a 4-3 finger movement on the A and D strings. After doing these a number of times back and forth, I noticed pain between my 3rd and 4th fingers, plus pain in the wrist and up into the left arm. I thought maybe it was a case of not having played for a while and just being out of shape, but it sounds like there's a lot more to it than that. I really would like to learn more about your LH technique. Do any of your books cover exercises, scales, etc using the 1-2-4 fingering method? Also, you mentioned on your playing tips page that you also have some attachments available. Might you be able to send them to me or post them somewhere for download?
