I assume you are asking where to place the thumb of your left hand.
I place it - lightly - where it naturally wants to be... almost directly opposite the index, maybe slightly towards the second finger. That is where my left hand is able to relax. I then use it as a pivot, reaching with my pinky, not so much with my third finger. Most of the time, my third finger "backs up" my pinky, especially on the first 7 frets or so. I tend to resort to one finger one fret method above the 7 th fret. But.... I pay close attention to how my hand feels. I don't hesitate to go back to the 1-2-4-4 LH method if any discomfort appears in my LH. In my opinion, I haven't given up much in the way of chops by doing this. I can still solo, I have good speed and accuracy, and more importantly, the listener can't tell the difference.
