If he can hold a guitar then the best approach would be to take the top 2 strings off a guitar and let him start, there gradually moving up to a regular scale bass. Seven is not at all to young to start playing. Just be sure he is having fun!! He can worry about technique when he's 8(ha). I that is old enough do they make a bass for someone his size?
