You may want to check out Mark Sabatella's Jazz Improvisation Primer, if you're interestred in playing jazz. (There's a link at It has much good background info and theory stuff. I guess I don't know too many other books about this stuff (though they're surely out there), I can tell you that I often benefit from checking out the chords that the piano/guitar players are using and then starting out using just a few chord tones. Learning to play the melody is also a good way to get ideas of what to do. Learning a Charlie Parker head is like transcribing a solo anyway, and it may help you hear how the melody is mostly just lots of rearranged arpeggios with leading tones here and there, which is all stuff that you may want to think about when you play your own solo. Take your time and express lots of crazy ideas. :)
