A couple of things:
I can identify with your position. I haven't done alot of cover tunes over the years (30 years, to be exact). When I have been in a band that has done other artist's tunes it has usually been a situation where we did our own arrangement. Well, now I am in a classic 70's rock band, and it is going to be cover tunes as close to the original as we can get it. Normally, I don't like this, but I really like the guys in the band, and I made a conscious choice to view the challenges presented to me... namely - how's my ear? How long can it take me to analyze and reproduce what the original artist played. There is a challenge there, because we aren't doing alot of I-IV-V rock n roll.
Sounds like if you want the work in your current locale, you may have to do the same thing. I discovered that if I want the work, sometimes I have to play what OTHERS want to hear. Please know what I just said is not a slap at you, but a reality in the gigging world. We don't always get to do stuff the way we want. I am in Georgia.... so you can bet I will play alot of (yawn) Skynard...
Paige
