Like Scotty said, that's what Jaco did. I had a Fender Jazz bass that I did that to, or I should say I had done by a guitar tech. I played it that way for a while and decided I wanted frets back so I had the same guitar tech put them back in up to the octave and left the high end of the bass fretless, best of both worlds. In the end the amount of work I had done this way messed up the bass and I sold it. It can be done, but my suggestion is to do one thing once. Happy bassing.
