: Hi all. Great board by the way. I am new to the bass and have been using the net for lessons. Everywhere I go it seems everyone wants me to learn and practice scales, so I've been trying to learn as many as I can. In the back of my mind I keep having this nagging question however: what good is it going to do me? What can I learn from scales.

I feel the important thing about playing scales (or anything for that matter) is listening to what you are doing. Scales give you a good idea of how notes relate to each other (sound wise) - of connecting your ears with your fingers. Make sure you understand how you can apply scales. It's very simple - Major scales 'work' over Major chords. Minor scales over Minor chords, etc. When you play scales - improvise using the scale, make up bass lines - think of it as ear training and always make music.
