I'm 13 and I've been playing bass for a year so I'm probably getting in over my head now but here goes... I started off out of a book that tought how to read sheet music and tab an I used that for about 3-4 monthes before I got to stuff that to me appeared stupid. Such as marking the certain notes flat at the beggining of the staff. Then when I went to play the line it would only play that note once. Why not just mark it flat once? As trivial as that is it kind of bugged me. So I put down my book and got on the internet and started getting tabs. I got into Blink-182 (not a very challenging band, that's why I like them) their music was only tabbed out because they couldn't read music. Well anyway, when I picked up my book again I was going over the sheet music and fought my eyes constantly looking at the tab. So I quit with the sheet musci and now all I use is tab. I can read sheet music but it's harder for me. I can also read neck diagrams. Now I am finally getting into some intermediate theory and I'm seeing the need for sheet music. So I must say that tab is very useful because for one it's free and the other is if you already own the cd you don't need the timing, you can figure it out. But tab also creates a problem once you try to advance. I hope I didn't sound stupid.
