I'm currently working on making a student of mine's bass frettless too. If you do this by yourself here's some tips! Use a soldering iron on each fret to heat up the glue holding the fret. This will make pulling the frets much easier and less messier. Try filling in the slots with thin strips of maple or other light colored veneer and then sand so they're all smooth to the touch. Then you can go ahead and put an epoxy on your fingerboard. There is an article in a recent issue of Bass Player from Rick Turner that discusses this. Best of luck!!!
