I beleive you are referring to the knobs on an Electric Bass when you refer to
the " controls". One of the controls will be for volume, this is found on every
electric bass. It allows you to adjust volume on the instrument, instead of having to walk over to the amplifier. The second control you will find is some type of filter(also called an EQ ) to boost, or cut a certain frequency.
Now if you bass has two pickups( the little black bars underneath the strings usually near the bridge, and neck)A knob can select which one you want to use, this can also be a switch. The neck pickup gives a very smooth sound, and the bridge pickup gives a very in your face sound great for slapping, the combination of both is pretty cool and thats what that knob is for.
