I was a clubdate drummer for two decades! I watched more technically adept drummers than I get fired for insisting on "sneaking in" licks.... their egos just wouldn't allow them to do what they were being PAID to do! If the bandleader who is PAYING you asks you to be creative, then do so. Otherwise, do what he's paying you to do, or admit that you're incapable of doing the job right Peter!

"Sneaking in" lines when you're being paid to play what's on the page is utterly juvenile & unprofessional. This is why more & more producers utilize machines instead of people to do the playing.... programming a machine once is ultimately cheaper than paying a guy who won't play what you pay him to play.

BTW - I've gigged w/ Grant Green & Gato Barbieri among others. But I'm sorry - I "must be" a guitar player who has no idea what he's talking about. I'll stop dispensing such 'crappy' advice, and defer to Peter Schmidt's infinite musical wisdom.
