Hi there,
Is yours a guitar tuner? You may find helpful to know the 2nd string of a standard guitar is tuned to B, so to tune that B string try to set your guitar tuner to tune the 2nd string of a guitar and play the 12th fret harmonic of your B string.
To cleanly apply distortion to your bass (I understand you want to apply it without mudding up the bottom end) I suggest two things: first, try to find a distortion unit especially designed for bass -some of them split the signal so the dirt is applied to the high end and the low frequencies remain clean. The most practical approach, though, is something I saw a few players (Billy Sheehan included) do, which consist in splitting the signal with a crossover and then send the "high" and "low" signals to different amps, applying distortion (or whichever other effect) to the former, leaving the latter uncontaminated.
Regarding your question about "fingers vs. pick", check out earlier discussions in this board. Some of us vented our impressions there.
Hope this helped. Buena suerte and keep that bass up front in the mix,
El Pájaro
