there is one other thing not mentioned -- if you play A open, then play the 5th fret on the E string (i.e. also A, in the same octave as the open string) you'll notice there is a difference in sound. as you go further up the neck you get a "rounder" sort of sound which some people like at a particular time. e.g. try playing the G string open. then play G 15 frets up on the E string -- same note, but much mellower sound. this might be why you see people exploiting this aspect.
