I agree with Brock for the most part. However, a pre-amp can do similar things for you. If you already have a pre-amped amp, you may or may not want to spend the extra bucks for the active bass. The active makes it louder but similar to turning up your pre-amp give or take a different flavor. Keeping in mind that in the passive mode, all the controls are simply resistors that CUT the corresponding signal. In the Active mode they boost or both cut and boost the signals. My 4 and 5 strings have both but I most often use the passive to control the sound to what I need in jazz. When I go back and forth between active and passive, the bass/treble knobs reverse functions because of the cut vs. boost function. Additionally, I try to use passive because I don't want to get caught in a middle of a gig with a dead battery - been there. Theoretically, you should put in new batteries before each gig, yeah right. Try before you buy and don't worry about what "they" say, do what "you" like.
