: Recently my friend(a guitarist) ask me to play bass for some songs and I agreed. But when I look at the songs, they provide no melody but chords only. So, how do I play the songs using just the chords and how can I improve on my bass playing beside playing the roots chords? And by the way, what is this style of bass playing (on roots chords and some simple chords movement change)called?
You have to make stuff up in the context of the song utilising the available notes from the chords. This is gonna be what you will see most often as a professional musician, a chord chart. Playing just root movement will get you through the tune, but you want to be able to create supportive, MELODIC lines. And it's a little more complicated to than just matching chord scale to chord. You might wanna start by learning triad arpeggios in root, first and second inversions in closed and open position. This will help get the sound of the chords in yer ears and is a little easier to approach than 4 part harmony.
