I own two Deans (Edge 5 and 6). I also own a 4 string Fender Precision bass (Mexican). To be honest, I love both of my deans. From the shape of the neck, to they're warm tones. Don't let me forget about the price. Two nice basses for under a grand? You can't beat that. I like the Fender too, but to me the Deans are more versatile. Funk, jazz, rock, lating, r&b, the Deans will get the job done very well. As a matter of fact, I'm buying another one. A four string fretless this time.

With any bass, I recommend a full setup, especially with mass produced foreign made instruments. Although all of my basses are passive (personal preference) they sound and feel good. Play them both "dry" before you make your decision. Don't let the amp distort the natural resonance of the instrument.
