I've been playing fretless for a while. I've found that the best strings to use are the Super round, like Dean Markley SR2000. They won't really tear up the fingferboard like Roto Sounds. I agree with El Pajaro, though, that it's worth while getting your neck coated with epoxy or cyaoencryalate (crazy glue). Epoxy seems to last longer, but cyanoencryalate is easier to do.
