: Okay, call me new, but what are the differences in sound between a fretted and a
: fretless bass?

The most well known fretless player was Jaco Pastorius. If you can get a hold of a Weather Report
CD like Mr. Gone or Heavy Weather, you'll hear the sound of a fretless played inhumanly well.
Other songs that have a fretless bass featured are Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh (sp?) and Everytime
You Go Away by Paul Young. Give a listen to any of these and you'll see why people want the sound of a fretless.

However, most music doesn't call for that sound. For years, I played only fretless
and had to disguise the sound so it sounded fretted. Band would rather have a bass that's always in tune and
has a sharper attack. The fretless has a very smooth attack and growls when you slide. It makes a good
second axe.

Good Luck,
