Hey there Luke,
A lot has been said and written against metronomes, but I think I'd stick with our esteemed colleague Alfonso's advice on this one. Anyway, I wouldn't use the metronome (or a drum machine or any other device which can provide a source of metronomical time, for that matter) for learning new music; use the metronome to practice the music you already know well. Otherwise, the click becomes primary concern and the notes are deemed secondary, if ever deemed at all.
And, since we're on the topic: try getting a drum machine to practice time; it's just a helluva lot more fun.
Buena suerte and keep all of your basses WAY up front in the mix,
El Pájaro
