I agree that practicing to a drum machine is more fun than to a metronome BUT....

A drum machine provides the 'feel' for you, so you don't really learn to *create* the feel. A metronome leaves you high & dry; there's no cover so you get to hear just how good or bad you really are. If you can 'swing' playing w/ a metronome, you will have no problem when you play w/ other musicians.

So use the drum machine til you develop a bit as a player & become comfortable w/ your instrument - then switch to a metronome and start really *listening* to the musicality of your playing! Can you & other listeners 'feel' the swing in your playing? Can they feel the funk? Can you rock them to their bones?

With a drum machine, you're keeping time; w/ a metronome, you're *creating* perfect time. Good luck!

PEACE
