Playing with others is best, especially if you can find a decent drummer (good luck). As far as practicing by myself, I've found that what helps me most is to practice with a metronome set to click on TWO and FOUR. It helps me to remember the bass players spot: ONE and THREE. That's 4/4 time, for those less experienced on this board. Four beats to a measure, or bar, with the SNARE DRUM (in caps) beating like this: one/ TWO/three/FOUR. If I ever feel like my bass part is starting to sound listless or bored, I remember to start accenting the "ONE" again.
