I also have small hands. I typically use a full-scale (34") Ibanez 5-string. Ibanez necks are narrow and fast, and the string spacing is not very wide, so they are ideal for small hands, even if the lenght is standard scale. I do have several short-scale basses (Gibson EBO - like Jack Bruce used, Vox Panther - the one with the very thin "toothpick" neck, and a headless Kramer Duke), but the most fun to play because of its guitar-like scale is my old Supro Pocket Bass. It has a huge sound. If you can find one, consider buying it. In good shape, they run $300 to $450. They date to the early and mid-60's.
