: Alright, listen. im a begginer. and i want to know if i should buy a 4 string or a 5 string. my other friend who plays bass, and is very good at it. has a 4 string and a 5 string. he says he sort of regrets getting the 5 string. he says it sort of gets in the way and doesnt sound as good as the others. but i was watchin some music videos and like all the bassists had 5 strings. and i wanna be in a band with my friends some time in the years. and i dont wanna get a string now and buy a whole new bass later. so what do you guys think about getting a 5 string. but just learning 4 strings, and when i am ready i go to the 5th? and what are your thoughts on the 5th string? is my friend right, or does he just not want me to be as good as him. thanks for your time! i appreciate it!
No one but you can decide that. However, your friend may be true: most five strings have awful sounding B strings. This is due to many causes, but mainly because of the bass scale lenght (distance from bridge to nut), which is OK for four strings but somewhat short for the tension a B srting needs. So my advice is, if you choose to get a 5, find one with a 35 inch scale lenght.
Buena suerte and happy hunting!
