I am a beginner too. I have been playing less than a year, and have a very busy career that limits my playing time. I do play in a jazz quartet and, although I started on a 4, I have switched to a 5 and am enjoying the flexibility of having more positions to use when playing the mostly walking bass lines in the jazz and pop standards that my quartet plays. If I have a quick chord change, having a five can allow me to make it without moving too far up or down the neck. Although having 5 strings may be a little more complex to learn, it can also make playing certain bass lines easier (and not just new songs by alternative bands like the ones you mentioned).
