Memorize the pitch of one string from one of your favorite recordings. Examples:
Bach's Organ Concerto in D minor - D string
Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever - A string
Miles Davis' So What - D string
Notice I'm choosing middle strings on the bass. You then tune the outer strings to these inner strings, check your octaves, and away you go!
I'd be tempted to get an electric tuner if I had a 5-string. That low B is hard to distinguish on stage. Even on a tuner, you'll notice the pitch is just too low to stay uniform.
