Well, i began bass a little while ago and its been a great expeirience, and i play a fretted four-string... in developing a slap technique i found the four string to be easier for me personally, as glen said because there is less space between strings and because i like the solid slap sound i can get out of the E. I can slap the E more easily than the other strings, and if i had a 5 string well the B might get in the way a little bit. especially because i prefer a thumb down slap position, i can get the most out of my E string. i often slap the E with my thumb and pluck with my fingers, and this has worked well for me. Ive also found that most of the songs that we play in our band are in keys like E or A, easy because the E string can be played open in these keys more easily than in others... Even though im a begginner i would still say go witht the 4string because learning the bass has been extremely fun and easy so far on the 4 --- just my attempt at some help. Also, like many others have said, dont rush your choice, i would have rather waited to find the best one for me rather than have had a salesman choose for me. Peace--- chris
