Actually, the number of strings on guitars, violins, cellos, etc. has varied considerably over the past four hundred years. I know seven-string viols (cello-type thing) were common in the 17th century. I wouldn't be surprised to find stringed "bass" instruments having as few as two, or even perhaps more than seven, strings in the past.

Your point about the negligible benefits of that fifth string is absolutely correct though, Bruce.

PEACE

: The electric bass guitar is a 40 year old invention, but the acoustic cats have been playing the finest, most complicated music in the world for 400 years with 4 strings! Need I say more? I think not!
