: I have a relatively low end bass, and have been trying to acheive a good slap sound. I have tried other basses, like an epiphone j-bass, the Curbow basses, and a few others i cant remember that had that metallic, punchy sound that we associate with slap. Well i was wondering is there any way to make minor changes to my bass and get closer to that sound im looking for? Like a string change, new pickup, etc... Nothing too drastic. Right now the flat sound of my musicman imitation bass just doesnt cut it, so any comments and possible solutions would be appreciated... thanks and peace. Chris

The simplest and cheapest thing to do would be to try different strings. However, i suggest looking at putting in a new pickup. If, as you say, you have a low end bass, then it stands to reason that the pickup is low end as well. Basslines make great pickups. Bartolini is good. You could even get a Musicman pickup. The point is there is no single greater change you could make toward the betterment of your sound than putting in a new crispy pickup.....late......john
