Hi there boys and girls,
Well, some of you know I live in Argentina, which means (among other things) my chances of actually seeing some of the greatest bassists play live are pretty slim (not many artists come down here to play concerts). Therefore, in many cases, cable TV is my main resource to actually get a taste for the live playing of some cats I would never see in concert otherwise.
So, a couple of nights ago I had the great luck to come across a live performance by Béla Fleck & the Flecktones on a TV show (with Vic Wooten on bass, of course), and I just can´t start to describe what an amazing effect it caused on me.
Now, I own a few Flecktones recordings, so previously I had the chance to get my mind repeatedly blown away by Vic's playing, but seeing him live was ...well, something else. His chops were jaw-dropping, of course, but his showmanship was nonetheless stunning, and the simple fact of seeing the musicians having so much FUN playing their asses off in front of a cheering audience was completely inspiring.
I mean, every now and then we have the chance to come across someone whose playing makes us so joyous and greatful for being musicians, and inspires us so much to send us running to the woodshed no matter how late at night it is. That (if there's an intelligible way to experess it) is what seeing Vic playing live made me feel that night. Wow.
So, for those of you who just happen to live near wherever the Flecktones play live, I say: GO! DON'T MISS THAT CHANCE! And don't forget to say hi to Vic from his #1 fan south of the border.
Buena suerte and keep those basses way up front in the mix,

El Pájaro
