: Hi! I'm new here!

: When I'm playing down low for a few minutes my left hand gets really cramped. Am I alone, and is there any advice you can offer to fix this?

Hey there,

No, you're not alone. Many players go through it. In the first place, make sure you warm up properly before you start playing. A good warm up should make the blood flow and the muscles ready for the effort.

Second: if it hurts, STOP! The "no pain, no gain" school of thought has harmed more people than it helped. It may be a good advice for bodybuilders, but make no mistake about it, bass playing ain't no gymnastics, and if you keep playing through pain you can hurt yourself badly.

And last: if the pain persists, don't hesitate to consult a physician. Pat Metheny's bass player Steve Rodby wrote a great article about the subject in Bass Player Magazine some years ago. Contact the magazine to get a copy, or just let me know in case they don't give it to you, I can mail you a photocopy.

Buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,

El Pájaro.
