: Well; it's very relative; with a pick you can't do things such as slap and/or thumb and it sounds much more metallic than if you play with your fingers, but there are bass playing styles that you can only do if you use a pick. Flamenco bass style is a good example for this (and believe me ; I don't know how to do it but it is annoying!!!).
: Anyway; I preffer finger style because sounds much more personal but it's only my oppinion...

Wellllll....
Using a pick gives you a certain sound. I have played almost 30 years, and I slap, pick, finger, pop... whatever is called for. As to using a pick, when I do a Motown styled song (circa 1960's thru 1970's) I use an elastic cloth hairband pulled over the strings of my bass neck - this muffs the sound a little, and then I use a pick, picking the notes just over the end of the neck on the string. This gives a real cool thumpy sound, but thanks to the pick, the note is very crisp without being too trebly.
Just another way of doin' business.....
Paige
